The big event !

Anime 2030 - History Lessons Continued

The Big Event of 2015

In May of 2015 high over the Pacific ocean there was an explosion, equal to about a 3,360 MT nuclear bomb ( the biggest nuke ever detonated was the 57 MT Russian Tsar bomb in 1961,  which was 3800 times larger than the Hiroshima explosion ) No one knew what had happened. Most scientists thought it was a meteor that had, for some reason, detonated just as it hit Earth’s atmosphere.

An hour later seismic reports, confirmed that something had smashed into the ocean, on or near the tiny island of Minami Iwo; about 1000km north of Guam island, 1300km from Japan, 2000km from China. The direct result of the impact was a sizable tsunami wave.

With in a few more hours teams form several nations were on their way to investigate the impact site. First in was the American-Japanese team from Guam. What they found was astonishing – an alien space craft about 1000m long 300m wide and 200m tall. ( the largest ship in the world is the Knock Nevis oil tanker at 458m long 68m wide 42m tall )

Naturally the first team on site wanted to keep the find for themselves. But there was no way that was going to happen. British-Australians soon arrived, as allies and wanted in. Russians and Chinese were next, although not welcome, they were not about to leave.  There were some very tense moments around the island as ships pointed weapons at each other and fighters circled overhead.

Importantly, dozens of photos of the alien ship, from air and ground, were made public before an info black out was put into place. The existence of the craft would be impossible to deny. Then after much debate a joint team was sent in. No one without top secret clearance knows exactly what was found inside the ship. But in a press conference the next day, it was confirmed that aliens do exist.

Also at the press conference, a halt to hostilities between major powers was declared, and an emergency session of the UN was announced. When asked “Do the aliens pose a danger?” The spokesman Dr Sarnoff, said “We have reason to believe that, if they wanted to, they could blow the earth to bits.”

Three days later a meeting of the United Nations was held in Tokyo. A report was circulated outlining the findings thus far and their implications. Although the alien ship was not yet considered safe, each nation was allowed to send one delegate to Minami to get a first hand view.

One week later, after much debate, the UN announced the establishment of the Macross Project to investigate the alien ship. Nations would be involved according to the funding and scientific talent they could provide. ( a practical but not very popular policy, it left many ‘third world’ nations out of the loop. )

In simple terms; the crash of the alien ship put an end to WW3 and marked the beginning of humanity’s interstellar relations. Although some people hoped that peace and harmony would be the path forward, the reality was that nations were cooperating under the shadow of a powerful outside danger; alien invasion.

Macross was not a pure science project. It aimed to understand alien technology so that we would have a fighting chance against them. As the years passed, Macross would offer the world more in terms of advanced weapons systems than peaceful personal consumer goods.

( most but not all powered armor and humanoid mecha come from the Macross research centers )

History Lesson 05

South East Asia

China is the major player here and is involved in several conflicts from 2012 to 2015.
In brief they are; the recapture of Taiwan, the support of North Korea against South Korea, the trade war with the USA, which turned into a battle with Japan.

Taiwan Takeover
Even before America was hit with the EMP in fall of 2012, China was attacking Taiwan.  They claimed it was an internal affair, just like the US using troops to squash riots in LA. Although the US had promised to protect Taiwan, domestic affairs quickly went down hill into civil war, so the Pacific Fleet was ordered not to get involved.

Fighting in Taiwan continued for most of 2013, until the island was subjugated.

Trade war in the Pacific
After the Federalists moved the American capital ‘temporarily’ to Hawaii, tensions between China and the US continued to mount. Hawaii having suffered not at all from the EMP, functions as an HQ of all loyal American armed forces. These included US bases:  Japan 51,000 men, South Korea 28,000 men, Hawaii itself 50,000 men. Also three of the four carrier fleets in the Pacific. The other fleet declared for the Constitutionalists and sailed to Alaska.

The fighting started early in 2013, as China’s navy expanded its trade sanctions against the USA. ( Although it was claimed to be part of the dispute over US default on debt, the strangulation of trade was really economic warfare aimed at keeping the US from making a fast recovery. ) Naturally the Americans claimed that China’s actions were illegal and compared the policy of trade restriction to state sponsored piracy.  Soon it was open war.

Although many Asian nations disliked the USA, they were not at all happy with China’s policy which disrupted all Pacific trade. With the North American market effectively dead, many eyes were on South America as a new place to sell the huge volumes of consumer goods sitting around in wear houses.

The critical factor of this war was one of one of military assets, ships and plains. In early 2013, America had the edge, in terms of naval power. But China was shifting to wartime production and building several aircraft carriers at once. It was only a matter of time before they would be able to extend their influence.

Hawaii had a topnotch base, but very little construction ability or raw materials. Unlike the situation in WW2, it could not expect resupply from the continental USA. Although the Federalists controlled all the major West Coast ports, they were only slowly recovering from the infrastructure damage caused by the EMP. Thus Japan would play a vital role in supporting the Americans for the next few years; a fact that made Japan a target.

China’s trade restrictions are soon put in place around Japan too. This was not tolerated by the JDF.

The Korean Conflict
North invades South, after accepting China’s help to keep other nations out of the fight. China commits ships to isolate Korea from outside interference. Although initially confident they can win, South Korea is soon asking for help. America, with a sizable force already on hand, determined if they were losing the fight they would use nukes.

In 2014 the nukes started flying. The Americans fired on both North Korea and main land China; aiming at industrial centers. NK responded by firing at SK and at Japan. These attacks were impressive but rather random in their targets. ( the city of Osaka is hit at this time ) The Chine’s strikes were more precise and powerful, aimed at military targets; they did serious damage.

The rest of the world watched in fear, wondering just how extensive the nuclear exchange would be. To the relief of all, there was no tidal wave of missiles. Just like in the Middle East, nukes were used occasionally rather than in a “destroy all” tactic.

Air India accidental clash
Late in 2013 conflict between India and China occurred around Nepal. It was probably an accident of overly aggressive pilots patrolling the boarder. Air craft exchanged fire and both sides lost a few fighters.  The tension quickly mounted as both sides expected the other to launch an invasion.

India had many advantages, however if suffered from indecisive leadership. China on the other hand, did not want a large land war (at this time) so it used an air strategy that aimed to bomb the hell out of northern India. Chine’s troops took up a defensive role.

History Lesson 04

The Middle East

A few days after the EMP crippled the USA, the uncoordinated attacks on American troops began. In Iraq and Kuwait there were officially some 27,000 troops and 180,000 contractors supporting them. In Afghanistan there were about 68,000 troops and 12,000 contractors supporting them. These were the main, but not the only, targets of attack. Several thousand more troops were posted to smaller bases around the area.

With its homeland knocked out the US forces were seen as easy targets. Years of repressed anger came quickly to the surface. Although some Arabs express that they are not angry at the troops themselves but at American foreign policy and corporate exploitation, the men in uniform were the targets.

Arms from Pakistan and Russia quickly found their way into the hands of the anti-American coalition. Although it had often supported the USA as a fellow UN member, Pakistan had suffered so many insults over the past decade that it was eager to exert its rights as a sovereign nation; including a no-fly zone. This became a critical issue for the American fleet in the Arabian Sea, who was trying to support the troops in Afghanistan.

Attacks on Americans intensify during 2013, as troops tried to withdraw. In many cases the men were saved by air lift, but valuable equipment was left behind. For small bases this was acceptable, but given the overall situation, commanders are not willing to abandon large amounts of now irreplaceable items. So the two main battle groups fought their way to the coast for evacuation.

Things got messy when nuclear missiles were fired from Pakistan at the US fleet. Although most are shot down without exploding, one reaches its target range near the air craft carrier H.G. Bush and detonates. As expected, the US retaliation is severe.

Note - The fact that most of the troops, including much of the navy was Constitutionalist, would later became important. Once they were safe and away from the combat zone, they did not take their orders from US - HQ in Hawaii.

Meanwhile…

Early in 2013, a coordinated attack is launched against Israel by its neighbors after a month long series of rocket attacks from Palestinian forces provides valuable data about the Israeli “Iron Shield” anti-missile system. Although the attack is no surprise, its effectiveness is much higher than expected; inflicting serious non specific damage on Israeli cities.

With civilian casualties high, but no real damage to their military from the concentrated (non-nuclear) missile attack, Israel is able to respond and the war is on.

It quickly becomes impossible to tell the two conflicts apart; everyone vs Americans and everyone vs Israel. The entire region is soon a hot bed of unorganized violence, ground fighting, air strikes and the occasional nuclear explosion.

Some European forces are also involved. Mercenary unis come to help Israel and a British brigade, including one air craft carrier, comes to help the Americans.

History Lesson 03

Africa

Freedom was the word of the day. As America collapsed and Europe experienced massive social upheaval, foreign influence on African countries declined sharply. Many of them took the opportunity to void their debt obligations, claiming that the entire system, always an unjust one, was braking down. This was the light side to the freedom of 2013 to 2015.

The dark side to freedom from outside influence was the tendency of tribal wars to erupt. Because many of the countries had artificial colonial boarders, that never sat well with the locals, wars had raged on and off since the 1990s. But with the sudden absence of the UN and other interference a great deal of old scores were up for settlement. Some of the bloodiest events of the decade happened in those two years, but they went largely unnoticed by the rest of the world.

South America

As the USA collapsed and Europe experienced massive social upheaval, many South American nations took the opportunity to void their debt obligations, claiming that the entire system, always an unjust one, was braking down. But unlike Africa, which descended into internal conflicts, Latin America launched a Union movement.

From 2013 to 2015 there were intensive talks to form OLAS “Organization of Latin American States” which had a prime goal of protecting member nations from outside abuses, like IMF and corporate domination.  Of course not every country wanted in on the deal, and a few in Central America who did want in were not very welcome.

The Panama Canal Conflict
In mid 2013 as Panama signed onto OLAS, a multi-national force ( including American, Australian, European, troops ) attacked to secure control of the canal. They resisted several attempts by the enthusiastic but disorganized forces of Brazil and Argentina to recapture the canal. But eventually, late in 2015, the OLAS had its victory.

History Lesson 02

Europe

The EMP over in America in late 2012 had no direct effect, but the sudden collapse of the USA sure did. No one had seriously expected things to go down hill so suddenly and so totally. Governments and corporations all over Europe were in a panic. As the economic domino effect of global market meltdown loomed, they frantically searched for salvation.

At the same time the economy was crashing, a great deal of social conflict came to a boil all over Europe. There were a wide range of groups who were angry at other groups, but the most common rally cry is “Burn the Bankers” or BBQ ( burn bankers quickly ) In some riots this was exactly what the people did, as the police fell back instead of opening fire on the mob.

Some nations like Greece, Spain and Italy quickly descend into anarchy early in the 2013, other places like Britain and France took a bit longer, while a few countries like Germany and Poland keep order by installing harsh martial law.

The EU continued to exist officially but in most ways it disintegrated, temporarily. The people saw it as part of the corrupt government that brought about the economic crisis. In some cases officials are lynched along with the bankers. The most spectacular battle of this kind is in Brussels, when the IMF offices with a private security force holds out against the mob for three days.

Of course violence is not only directed at institutions, in many nations race riots are serious problems also. The Muslim community in France takes a beating. There were no formal wars between European nations. But there were several clashes at the boarders, as all countries temporarily restrict movement.

The Middle East Mess
Early in 2013, the Arab nations launch an attack on the stranded US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and also declare war on Israel. The British after failing to pressure the EU and NATO into sending troops in, begins their own relief mission. “Our American cousins may be wankers some times, be we are not going to stand by and let them get slaughtered.” said the PM to a reporter outside parliament. The rescue operation of course got more complicated and messy than the public wanted to tolerate.

At the same time other European nations were hotly debating involvement, to save Israel. Many chose to send mercenary units, which included regular military troops of Jewish decent, who were officially on extended vacations.

The Save Canada Project
In 2014 after some of the worst anarchy in Western Europe was over, Britain pushed for a plan to help Canada recover. Other countries quickly joined the initiative. They wanted to restore a valued trading partner and source of raw materials. However the new Canadian government refused any deals that involved long term debt. So things moved along very slowly.

Russian

They laughed long and hard over the situation in America. But at the same time they worried about what China might do now that the USA was effectively out of world politics. For most of 2013 Russia had no external problems, and its internal troubles were driven more by its own factors than by those of the global economic collapse.

The war in the Middle East is seen as a good thing in Russia; as an opportunity to sell weapons and test some experimental equipment. Also it was satisfying in watching the American forces being attacked from all sides.

The war in Korea was like wise seen as good for business, especially because it offered field testing for equipment against Japan.  Although not officially involved in the war, Russia maintained a large no-fly zone around Vladivostok and so got into a few dog fights.

Politically there was a hot debate between those who wanted to crush the Americans and those who wanted to help them. However tempting it was to take direct action against the old enemy, the Americans still had several bases and submarines with nuclear missiles able to damage if not destroy Russia. So a more pragmatic and daring policy was put into play.

The owning of orbital infrastructure.
Over two years Russia sent dozens of missions into space to physically high-jack US satellites. They not only installed new software, but replaced key hardware, including self destruct devices. By 2015 the only satellites in American control were the ultra high orbit ones, which were not worth the cost of capture missions.

History Lesson 01

Anime 2030    Events everyone knows:

This is a summary of the major events from 2010 to 2030.
"Pay attention class there will be a quiz"

But to understand them, one must keep in mind the economic crisis of 2008, in which millions of average Europeans and Americans lost their savings and often their homes, while the corporations that were “to big to fail” were bailed out by the governments. Public tax money was used to save the companies who were responsible for the crash.

By 2010 we had passed through the “crisis of financial capital” which was all about the toxic sub-prime mortgage backed security investments and we had entered the age of “the sovereign debt crisis” which was concerned with the huge amounts of debt many nations were floating. In some cases the numbers were so large as to be impossible to ever pay.

North America

During 2010 to 2012 there were increasing tides of popular anger against both governments and corporations. The best knows is the 99% movement, which was concerned with the ever increasing gap between rich and poor. At first these protest groups were peaceful, calling on government to make changes to the unjust system. But they were ignored and new austerity measures followed by new security measures were put in place (especially in USA). The protests started to turn more violent in 2012.

The beginning of WW3 was the collapse of the USA in late 2012. Social unrest in the summer turned into all out civil war in the fall. As police put down protests and National Guard units lay siege to Militia camps, a sizable section of law enforcement and regular military personnel staged a revolt. They declared themselves to be Constitutionalists in favor of a return to “proper government”. They accused the Federalists of abusing power and turning the land of the free into a fascist state.

At the same time that US troops were being used to squash riots in LA, China launched an assault on Taiwan. They approved of US actions to settle a domestic problem and they claimed that the situation in Taiwan was exactly the same. ( China had always said that Taiwan was a rouge province – never admitting it was independent. ) Of course this lead to high tension between Washington and Beijing.

The US suspended its debts held by China, until they withdrew from Taiwan. China responded by suspending all shipments of goods to North America. This was seen by many as a declaration of economic war. However the boiling point between the two nations was never quite reached because civil war broke out in America.

The economic disaster accelerated as the fighting in America escalated. The entire world started to panic as the global trade network fell to pieces in a matter of weeks.

In late September 2012 several high altitude nuclear devices were detonated over the USA, effectively blanketing the continent with and EMP that destroyed power and communications infrastructures. It plunged most of Canada and Mexico into chaos too. Federalists and Constitutionalists each blamed the other side for the attack. At the same time each side had a sizable strike force EMP-proof and ready to go as soon as the lights went out.

Unfortunately neither side was able to win a quick victory in the civil war, and so for the next several years the continental USA plays almost no role in world history. But Americans are not absent from the unfolding events, rather they are critical catalysts.

Hawaii and Alaska were unaffected by the EMP, America also had some 32 full-sized military bases in 13 countries outside the USA with more than 1,000 personnel. They are: Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Japan, Bahrain, Djibouti, South Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait. Add to this the 5 naval task forces that were out to sea, who also avoided the EMP.

Critical to the unfolding events is the fact that Hawaii is a Federalist state (regardless of what some Hawaiians think). It becomes the acting capital of the USA. Alaska on the other hand is a Constitutionalist state, while not declaring independence all its actions right from the start of the civil war were clearly those of a sovereign state.

Of some interest it should be noted that the northern territories of Canada were also unaffected by the EPM. That is to say the direct blast did no real harm to them. The sudden cutting of ties with the rest of the country did have some serious impact. In the long term there was a strengthening of the bond between the four northern neighbours; Alaska, Yukon, NWT and Nunavut, so that by 2015 they declared themselves a nation.

Canada 2012 to 2015
The EMP disrupts infrastructure so that the population suffers serious hardship through the winter. There is no civil war, although there are some isolated fights over resources and some troubles with the Americans. The government although intact is unable to have much effect and so communities are left to survive on their own.

By 2015 most of the provinces have re-established some sort of order. However the federal government is a shadow of its former self. The often voiced “Things will be back to normal soon.” Is not accepted by many regions, who what a new deal. In many ways Canada will become more like a union of self governing states than the USA ever was.

Mexico 2012 to 2015
The EMP disrupts the northern half of the country. Anarchy is the main result. Although for many of the poor there is little noticeable change in living conditions. Mexico City and the south are not directly affected but they do suffer spin off effects.

There is a great deal of fighting along the boarder with the USA, as Mexicans take the opportunity to go north and Americans flee south. The entire north becomes something of a no-man’s land during these years as the government is slow to rebuild infrastructure.

Continental USA 2012 to 2015
After the EMP the civil war sets down into an unorganized grind of fighting. Both sides try to maintain a nationwide fighting force of loyal bases, but find it difficult. The civilian population is devastated by the destruction of infrastructure and their main concern becomes one of simple survival, especially during that first year.

Of special note is the abandonment of the New York area. Almost immediately after the EMP, hurricane Sandy hit; a nearly perfect disaster. Many survivors quickly abandon the city, reasoning that no help would be coming. Millions were on the move in the winter of 2013, looking for a safe place. Although they were the victims of one tragedy, they caused a great deal of more destruction.

The new official US government, formed by the constitutionalists is centered in Chicago. It counts most of the Great Lacks states as loyal members. Although by its very nature it is a week centralized governing force.

The old official US government, controlled by the federalists moved to Hawaii. It continued to hold some scattered states loyalty and controlled some key installations. But more important it has a solid grasp on all the major West coast port cities.

By 2015 some order has been restored to sections of America, but the war is not over, and very few repairs had been done to infrastructure, except on purely local levels. A lot of the mid-west look more like the old-west, while the Main, Vermont, Massachusetts area has reverted to a very colonial style. The urban sprawl around New York was an abandoned concrete jungle. Washington was a ruined battle ground.

Genre: Action, Mecha, Music, Romance, Sci-Fi
“After being threatened by extinction at the hands of alien invaders called the Zentradi, humanity undertook the task of guaranteeing itself a future by launching fleets of colony ships into space.” The show is related to Robotech, but not very relevant to our RPG.

This story line will be worked into the RPG more or less as it is.

Noir –
“Set in the near future, Mireille is a young woman, a lone-wolf type who is one of the most talented assassins in the underworld.” It’s a good example of hyper-skilled gun-bunny type characters. Did Mereille ever cross paths with Canaan?

Ouran High School Host Club –
“Ouran High School is for the extremely wealthy or talented. Haruhi just happens to be more talented than wealthy.” For over the top silly fun, this is the show.

Robotech –
Genre: Adventure, Mystery, Mecha, Romance, Sci-Fi, Shounen, Space, Military
“The story of the Zentraedi Super Dimensional Fortress crash landing on a tiny island on Earth known as Macross Island. The UN Forces rebuild the ship and name it the SDF-1.”
A lot of the story line in the show will be used in the RPG, as far as some aliens go.

Rosario + Vampire –
“By a bizarre coincidence, Aono Tsukune has accidentally gotten himself admitted to a Youkai Academy, a school attended by monsters.” In the RPG some of the monsters will be attending your school, but its no accident.

Sailor Moon –
Genre: Demons, Magic, Romance, Shoujo
“Tsukino Usagi is in junior high. She's ditzy, whiny, and a crybaby. However after a bad day, Usagi encounters a black cat that can talk! The cat, Luna, grants Usagi the power to transform into Sailor Moon,” I don’t really know the show very well but it’s a classic.

School Rumble –
“It's a comedy love-triangle, with humour that comes in from left field!”

Shuffle!
“When two doors are discovered in an ancient ruin, the gateways to shinkai, the realm of the shinzoku (Gods) and makai, the realm of the mazoku (Demons) are irreversibly opened.”  Things in the RPG world will not be so out in the open, but yea it’s true.

Skip Beat!
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance, Shoujo
“The story of Kyouko who went with her childhood friend, Shou, to Tokyo to pursue his dream of becoming an idol. After being dumped, Kyouko vows to get her revenge by entering the entertainment world.” Strange and funny show, interesting look at the entertainment world, I will use most of the characters from the show in the RPG.

Tenjou Tenge –
Genre: Action, Comedy, Drama, Ecchi, Martial Arts, School, Shounen, Super Power
“Souchirou Nagi and Bob Makihara are two delinquents who arrive at Toudou Academy with the objective of ruling over the school. But on their first day, they encountered the Jyuukenbu, a martial arts group of the school.” Ideas for high powered martial arts – yes.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya –
“Suzumiya Haruhi is a good-looking high school girl who has naughty personality, and very egocentric thought. She has an unimaginably tremendous power to change the world, but she is totally unaware of her own power.” Will she be in your school?

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun –
Genre: Action, Supernatural
“Academy City. 2.3 million inhabitants. 80% of the students are active in the ‘Brain Development Program’ and out of those only 7 are Level 5s. Mikoto and her friend Kuroko, help maintainers of peace and order in the University district.”
It’s a great show. The city and a lot of setting ideas will be worked into the RPG.
Mikoto and her friend will be 3rd year students at your school.

Toaru Majutsu no Index –
Genre: Action, Magic, Sci-Fi, Super Power
“Set in a city of scientifically advanced superhuman students, but where magic is also real. Toma Kamijo one day finds a young girl hanging on his balcony railing. She turns out to be a nun from the Church of England, on the run from some nasty people.”
It is the same world as Railgun and characters do crossover.

Tokyo Mew Mew –
Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Magic, Romance, Sci-Fi, Shoujo, Supernatural
“On her first date with the cutest boy in school, Ichigo is zapped by a mysterious ray that scrambles her DNA with that of an Iriomote wildcat. The next day, Ichigo discovers that she has developed the agility (and occasionally the ears and tail) of a cat.”
What is Anime with out a magical cat girl? The RPG will have one or more, for sure.

Toradora!
Genre: Comedy, Romance, School, Slice of Life
“It’s a new school year and Ryuuji Takasu discovers he’s in the same class as tiny Taiga Aisaka “Palmtop Tiger” the most feared female delinquent of the school.”
I just have to fit Taiga into a school with super powered people somehow.

Trigun –
Genre: Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi
“Trigun takes place in the distant future on a deserted planet. Vash the Stampede is a gunfighter with a legend so ruthless that entire towns evacuate at the rumor of his arrival. However, the real Vash is not the same man that rumor portrays him to be.”
Somehow a big part of the USA has to fit this setting, and Vash will be there.

Witch Hunter Robin –
Genre: Action, Mystery, Drama, Magic, Supernatural, Police
“Witches are individuals with special powers like ESP, telekinesis, mind control, etc. Robin, a craft user, arrives from Italy to work for an organization named STN Japan Division. Unlike other divisions they capture the witches alive.”
A show with major coolness factor. All of it will be transplanted into the RPG world.

Yes - I have watched way to much... but Im still not Otaku
