Week 1 – Day 1.
The Japanese school year begins in April, not in September
like in the United States
and other countries. Early April is also the time when cherry blossoms are in
full bloom. Like many schools, OEAOE has cherry trees growing on its grounds.
The first day of a new school year is always special, for
new students even more so than for returning ones. Home room starts at 9am
instead of the usual 8:30am, allowing for late arrivals and those who get lost.
The home room teacher spends what is normally the first period giving the
introduction lecture. In the case of returning students it is a less formal
‘welcome back’ speech and a general discussion of how people spent their March
brake. ( Unlike most schools, the Academy links a class of students to the same
home room teacher for their entire three years of study. Each year the teacher
and students move up a floor to the next grade level. In this way the teacher
may evaluate a student’s progress more accurately over time. )
In place of second period there is a general assembly in the
large gym. The principal gives his welcome speech, then introduces key staff
members and the student council members.
There is an
early lunch brake, starting at 11am, instead of third period. As the new
students are eating the clubs set up their recruitment booths in the central
court yard. The club exhibition runs from11:30am to 1pm, then resumes after
school is dismissed at 3pm.
In place of
fourth and fifth periods there is a chance for students to visit the elective
teachers. ( Of the five periods
per day four are required classes and one is elective. The required classes
are; 1 hard science, 1 social science, 1 physical training, and 1 ‘required
life skills’. The elective class is chosen from a list which includes the arts
and the study of foreign things.
Everyone from a home room attends the same required classes; however
elective classes tend to mix students. )
The Character Events - Day 1
On this first day of school Sainen and his side kick Somni,
the mute monk, showed up early to loiter around the front gate and watch
students arrive. Kimi also arrived early, although her side kick Shin was no
place to be seen. He was following orders from the shrine master not to let
everyone know there was any connection between him and Kimi.
Although she was often slow to get going in the morning,
today Aoki was up super early and made it to school shortly after they unlocked
the doors. She went to the secretary hopping that the uniform in her size was
ready, but was disappointed when told it would be another 3 days before it was
in. As Aoki left the office she passed a giant of a girl, who was also in deed
of a specially tailored uniform.
Anya arrived shortly before class was to start, parked her
motorbike then went to see the secretary, hopping her uniform was ready. Unlike
little Aoki, who was worried about the social consequences of not having a
proper uniform, tall blond Anya just shrugged about it and went to class in her
street clothes.
In the
classroom there was the usual excited chatter of new students before the
teacher arrived. Most of them were social enough, although a few sat quietly
ignoring the world. Sainen though a card game would be a good way to brake the
ice. He was quite surprised when a small girl, who looked like she should be in
middle school, joined the game and played very well. Then in walked the Amazon.
Everyone paid attention to her; tall and blond she must be an American, but she
said “No – Im Canadian.”
By lunch
time Anya and Aoki were hanging together like a very odd pair, with Sainen and
Somni tagging along. They went to the Club exhibition together, split up to
look at a few different booths, then regrouped at the Occult club. It was there
that they ran into Kimi and Hadohi.
The Occult
Club’s booth was run by Iada “Terra” Mitsumi – acting head of the club. She was
in fact the only member left, after the rest of them disappeared while on an
investigation a few weeks ago. Although she wants to find out what happened,
she is hesitant to put anyone at risk. So her recruitment is more like a
warning “Occult stuff is real and can be dangerous.”
Of course
all the new students don’t just devote themselves to a single club. Anya joins
the Gun Club, Kimi joins the Light Music Club, and Hadohi takes a few shifts of
work per week at the student café.
Note: The
school has a cafeteria on the main level that serves cheep mass meals. It also
has a student run food court “the café” located on the fourth floor, which
serves a wide range of usually better and more expensive meals.
The first
day ends with a crowd gathered in the central court yard to watch a fight.
Kenji Harima – biggest delinquent at school, takes on the new tough guy –
wannabe. After several minutes of brawling, Kenji delivers the final ass
kicking.
Week 1 - Day 2
Students
must submit their request forms for elective classes, every once must chose a
primary and secondary, in case the primary if full. By the end of the week
those classes will start, in the mean time everyone has a free period some time
during the day.
Anya joins
Miss Siam’s
combat class. Aoki joins Professor Snape’s mythology class, but a computer
“error” places her into his more advanced Magic 303 class. Both Kimi and Sainen
join Coach Togo’s
advanced fitness class. Hadohi takes the cooking class, with Doctor Watt
filling in for the usual home-economics teacher, who is out on maternity leave.
At the
Occult club, the new members talk with Terra about what the club normally does.
Of course the subject of the missing members and the case they were working on
comes up. She tells the group that Professor Snape ( the club’s advisor ) has
forbidden any investigation into such a dangerous matter, until later. So the
group considers what paranormal things it may took into.
