Regional Updates 01

North America

It was now split into several new nations; Canada remained but without the northern territories. They had joined with Alaska to become the Wawasayg Republic ( a native word meaning Northern Lights ) Under normal conditions Canada would not have been willing to see a huge area full of resources granted independence. But the new government was still recovering from the EMP and most of its policies were all about increased regional autonomy, so the Wawasayg was formally recognized in 2015. The fact that one fully functional US carrier group had made Alaska its new home, helped settle the matter.

 The former USA was split into many sections;
1. Lower Ney York state and most of New Jersey were abandoned. The constitutionalists formed the ‘UGLS’ United Great Lacks States, more often know as the New-USA, with its capital at Chicago. It included; Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and upper New York.
2. New England became an official ‘non nation’ region when it established a congress in 2016.
3. The Mississippi League included; Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi State, Arkansas and most of Tennessee.
 4. Texas expanded to include New Mexico and Oklahoma. Under tight military rule, they claimed to be constitutionalists wanting freedom from Washington’s tyranny, but for the most part they acted like federalists.
5. The actual federalists, with their capital in Hawaii, had control of most of the West coast, except for the area around LA, which was abandoned.  Most of the western-central states were unaffiliated, doing the best they could on their own.
6. Around the Appalachian Mountains there was a strong isolationist movement, which had no formal government, they simply resisted outside interaction with a near united front. The territory cut across several state lines.

As complicated as all that is, it’s only half the story. Both Federalists and Constitutionalists held key military assets scattered all over the country, until 2015. At the time the Constitutionalists gave control over to locals, while the Federalists did not.

In Mexico an attempt to rebuild the north after the EMP had largely failed. One could draw a line across the country from Tepic to Tampico. Above the line was “bad lands” below it was the ‘real’ Mexico. Because of this neglect, Tijuana declared independence as the TFP and took control of the peninsula.

From 2018 onward, both Canada and Mexico were participating in the Macross project, although at very low levels. The Canadians claimed they were only interested in peaceful technology.

Europe

The Union got back on its feet, with a new agreement drafted in 2016. Member nations would be interconnected in ways that were less likely to cause a domino crisis if one country encountered problems or wanted to withdraw.

As an interesting side note; there was a resurgence of respect for the aristocracy. Not the stuffy elite traditionalists, but the new generation of heirs to old titles, many of whom had fought in the streets leading protests. Following the coronation of Prince William (as King William V of England) in 2016, there was a surprise drive all over Europe to reinvent constitutional Monarchies and a system of nobility. Of course the entire affair was a wash with idealism and the modern view that all powerful institutions must be limited. By 2020 almost every nation in Europe had a monarch as its head of state; a post that was mostly symbolic but that could act as a check on the power of government.

From about 2020 onward, the EU seriously got its space program off the ground and started developing weapons systems based on the research coming from the Macross Project. There was a great deal of cooperation, but no unified plan or infrastructure to defend Europe against aliens.
